Loading a Front Page Web

You can open your web/ webs easily using several option that Front Page provides.
Choose File, Open Web from the file menu
On the Front Page Toolbar click down arrow beside the open icon and select Open Web from the drop down list.
The third way is to go to File menu and select Recent Webs, and the name of the web you want to open.

You can specify which web you want to load first when you start Front Page. To do this:

Go to Tools Menu, Options
In the Options window, check "Open last web automatically" box.

The ensuing Open Web dialog box provides several ways of looking at your web/webs.

Using the Folder List

It is primarily a navigation aid. Clicking a folder displays the contents of that folder in the Contents pane.

Open a web in Front Page 2000.
Click Folders icon in the Views bar.
Click folders/sub-folders in the folder list.
The contents are displayed in the contents pane.

Folder list will not allow you to view sub-webs of the current web. To view sub-webs, double click the web icon in the folder list pane. It opens a new instance of Front Page 2000 where you can see the sub-web's folders and sub-folders.

Right clicking a folder in the Folders View, yields several options on the shortcut menu:

Copy
Delete
Properties
New Page
New Folder
Cut
Rename
Convert to Web : Converts a folder from a folder into a web.
Convert to Folder: Converts a web to a folder.

Working with Front Page's Views
Folders View

Not very graphically pleasing but is well suited for people who are comfortable dealing with files and folders. Intended for web designers and maintainers who like working at file and folders level.

To access Folders view:

Click Folders icon on Views bar
Or alternatively, click Folders from the Views Menu

Folders View shows Contents pane and Folder List. It is like Windows Explorer. You can see your files and folders here.

The contents pane displays the following information:

Name of file or folder or web.
Title of the document
Size of the document
Type of the document, like .html , .asp or simply a web.
Modified date.
Modified by.
Comments.

Working with Individual Pages in Folders View

Double clicking a document in Folders View opens it in Page View Front Page editor. You can edit and save your page here. Right clicking a document will yield a short cut menu with several options:

Open: opens the document.
Open with: opens a document in the editor of your choice.
Cut: removes a page or folder and places it in a clipboard. Use it to move files or folders around.
Copy: copies to clipboard a file or a folder.
Rename: lets you change the name of a file or folder.
Delete: removes a file or folder permanently. Use carefully.
Add Task: used to assign tasks to people to manage webs.
Properties: shows a file's properties.
Check in/check out: It will only appear if you have the check in/check out feature enabled through Tools, Web Settings dialog box. Very useful for multi-designer shops.

Reports View

Is a tool for maintaining your web. It runs several reports on your web like how many broken hyperlinks you have in your web. Chapter 18 covers this in greater detail.

Navigation View

Offers a visual display of your web along with its navigational structure. Helps you organize your web's navigation bars. It makes it easy to add and organize your web structure. To work in Navigation View

Click Navigation in the Views Bar
Or Click Navigation from the Views Menu
Navigation Views also shows Folders List
You can drag and drop files from the Folder list to make your structure.
Each rectangular box in the navigation view is a page.
It shows the relationship of one page to the other. Also the hierarchy of the web is evident in this view.

You can do a lot of things in this view.

You can add new pages.
Drag and drop pages from the folder list to organize your structure.
You can rename a page, and give them a new title.
Right click any file in Navigation View and a menu pops up with several options.

Navigation View is the View used when Front Page formats your navigation bars for your web. If the structure is not right, the navigation bars would not be correct. You can do the following in Navigation when you right click a box:

Open a page
Open a page in your editor of choice
Add an external hyperlink to your page and web.
Cut
Copy
Paste
Rename
Delete
View Sub-tree Only: lets you see the child pages of the selected page.
Add Task
Properties
Rotate: rotates the web structure.

Several other options are available. Explore and experiment with them.

Hyperlinks View

Hyperlinks view shows explicitly the links between the various documents in the web. Hyperlinks View comes with Folders List.

Select a file in the Folder List
Then click Hyperlinks icon on the Views Bar
It will show you how the selected page is related/linked to other pages.
Right click any document in the Hyperlinks View and choose Move to Center.
You see the selected page move to the center and its relationship to other pages.
You can click the plus (+) sign on any document to view its relationship to other pages.

You can do several things using Hyperlinks context menu. Click away from a document in the Hyperlinks window.

Show Page titles shows the titles of the pages
Hyperlinks to Picture shows how the pictures are hyperlinked.
Repeated Hyperlinks shows multiple hyperlinks to several pages.
Hyperlinks Inside Page shows links within a page
Web Settings brings up the web settings dialog box.

Front Page Menus

We are already familiar with most of them. To get more detailed information go to pp. 352-356. No need to repeat what you know. Play around some more with the Menu options.
